What is Waves of Change?

Waves of Change is a community-driven initiative led by Mujeres Latinas of South Carolina that brings together environmental care and joyful family experiences.

We place wooden toy-sharing boxes at beach entrances, where families can leave gently used beach toys for other children to borrow and enjoy.

This simple idea encourages a culture of sharing, reducing, reusing, and recycling, while also teaching values like generosity, responsibility, and respect for the environment.

Why It Matters

This project embraces the environmental values of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, while also teaching children and families about generosity, responsibility, and sustainability in a fun, hands-on way. It reminds us that protecting our planet can start with simple actions — and even with a child’s smile.

How We're Making It Happen

We’ve already built and painted our first box thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the generous support of community members. To keep the momentum going, we are:

  • Seeking donations of wood and eco-friendly materials

  • Welcoming monetary donations to cover construction, paint, and labor

  • Organizing volunteer brigades to maintain and promote the use of each station on weekends

Throughout the summer (June–September), our volunteer teams will be on-site each weekend to:

01

Care for the boxes

02

Talk with beachgoers

03

Share the mission behind Waves of Change

04

Invite people to scan a QR code on the boxes to learn more and get involved

About Waves of Change

🪣Grab a Cleanup Bucket

Visitors may borrow a cleanup bucket while walking along the beach and enjoying the coastline.

♻️Collect Debris

Community members voluntarily collect litter during their beach visit to help protect marine ecosystems.

🌊 Share the Mission

Volunteers and visitors help spread awareness about environmental responsibility and coastal stewardship.

How Waves of Change Works

Every year, thousands of pieces of litter are left behind on our beaches, affecting wildlife, marine ecosystems, and the beauty of our coastal communities.  Waves of Change encourages small community actions that create a lasting environmental impact.

🌊 Waves of Change Kickoff Together

we took the first step toward cleaner beaches and healthier coastal communities. On April 25, 2026, volunteers, families, and community members came together at the 25th Avenue Beach Access on Isle of Palms to launch Waves of Change — a community initiative focused on reducing beach litter, protecting marine life, and inspiring environmental responsibility through small everyday actions.

Every piece of trash removed represents a positive impact for our oceans, wildlife, and future generations.

Join the Wave

Together, we can make a real difference, one toy, one family, and one beach day at a time. Waves of Change is more than a project. It’s a movement — and you’re invited to be a part of it.

Thank you for being part of this journey.Let’s create waves that reach far beyond the shoreline. 💙
