An educational experience that introduces participants to the history, cultural significance, and preservation of Fort Lamar Historic Preserve. Through guided interpretation and outdoor exploration, participants learn how historical sites connect communities to their past while promoting stewardship of South Carolina's cultural and natural resources.

Hands-On Learning Experience

During this guided educational experience, participants explored Fort Lamar Historic Preserve alongside members of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Anthropology Unit.
​
Participants learned about the Battle of Secessionville, fought on June 16, 1862, and its significance during the American Civil War. Through on-site interpretation, participants discovered how Confederate and Union forces occupied and defended the area, the strategic importance of James Island, and the role Fort Lamar played in protecting Charleston.
The experience also introduced participants to the daily lives of soldiers during the Civil War, including living conditions, military defenses, transportation, communication, and the challenges faced by both armies.
Throughout the visit, participants examined the landscape, explored the historic earthworks, and learned how archaeologists, historians, and preservation professionals work together to protect and interpret South Carolina's cultural resources for future generations.

Program Outcomes
Upon completion of this experience, participants will:
